Letter to City of Albuquerque updatePosted on: March 13, 2012, by : Gregg
Just thought I would update what has happened with my letter to the City regarding sustainability…..
After sending the letter to all City and County officials, the Solid Waste Dept and others, I received two…yes, two…whole responses. One was from a county commission’s assistant and the other was from County Commissioner Wayne Johnson. 2 replies out of 19! I know this isn’t a number one priority for elected officials but come on. In the words of Seth Godin, this is broken.
Discouraged (and pissed) I forwarded the letter to the Albuquerque Journal. It was printed on 7 March 2012 and was titled “City Could Be Doing More To Encourage Sustainability”. On 8 March 2012 I get a call from the Solid Waste Department. They now ordered 1 yard dumpsters that they are going to make available to commercial pickups and we are the first customer for them.
So, on one hand, I am happy the City tweaked a policy. On the other hand, I am disappointed that this was a compromise of a solution to keep some sustainably minded individual quiet and somewhat happy.
I plan to continue to push the City so if you know of other companies that are looking to join in the sustainability movement, please send me an email.
